Natural Home Treatments for Gout

When a person has a severe gout attack, they are often unable to walk because of the excruciating pain in the feet. Many take to their bed or a comfortable chair, and use a walking aid when getting up. Gout is an arthritic disorder that is caused by too much uric acid in the blood. Symptoms of gout occur because of the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints and how the body responds to them. Gout traditionally affects the joint in the big toe.

Home remedies have been used for decades to help relieve the symptoms of gout:

1. Tart cherry juice

2. Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral that is good for gout because if there is a magnesium deficiency it could worsen the chronic inflammatory stress that the body may have. Magnesium lowers uric acid levels while also lowering the risk of gout. Eat foods rich in magnesium, or take a magnesium supplement daily.

3. Ginger

Ginger is an herb that is often recommended for inflammatory health conditions. Ginger can greatly reduce the pain associated with uric acid in gout. Ginger can be taken internally, or used as a paste to soothe the painful areas. This is done by boiling the ginger root.

4. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar with warm water, lemon juice, and some tumeric makes a delightful drink and remedy for gouty arthritis. Apple cider vinegar is known to support kidney function, and the other ingredients will help lower uric acid. Mix the ingredients, adjust to personal taste, and drink it from two to three times per day for most effectiveness.

5. Nettle

Nettle tea is a stinging herbal tea used as a home remedy to reduce the pain and inflammation of gout. Boil a cup of water, and put in one to two teaspoons of nettle tea, and drink two to three cups per day for maximum results.

6. Bananas

Bananas are rich in potassium that helps the organs and tissues in the body function at optimum levels. Because of their high sugar content, it is recommended that only one banana be eaten a day for gout benefits.

7. Soak in epsom salts

Epsom salts are also recommended as a good home remedy for attacks of gout. Bathing in magnesium rich Epsom salts will help prevent the risk of gout. Pour up to two cups in the bath, and soak the entire body, or just specific joints for symptom relief.

Following a sensible gout diet, and taking advantage of some of the above mentioned home remedies could provide relief of gout symptoms and attacks. The diet should include nutrient rich foods that do not contain large amounts of sugar. You should always check with your doctor before trying any home remedies to ensure that you can benefit from them, and for your safety.
