Melanoma Prevention Tips
One of the most serious types of cancer, melanoma develops within the cells that produce melanin in the body. Melanin is the pigment in the skin that gives it color. Melanoma can form within the eyes and occasionally will form in the internal organs, such as the lungs or intestines. The causes of melanoma aren’t clear. Exposure to sunlight, tanning beds/lamps, and UV rays have been linked to developing melanoma. The risk of developing melanoma increases over the age of 40, especially for women.
While melanoma will develop on any location on the body, most often it is found in the areas that are most exposed to UV lights or sunlight. These areas include the face, legs, back, and arms. Luckily, even though melanoma is one of the most deadly types of skin cancer, it is also the easiest one to prevent.
Here we will take a look at some tips and tricks you can do to keep you and your skin healthy all year long:
1. Stay covered up
We all like to show some skin, but it’s best to save the revealing clothing for the evenings when the UV rays from the sun are at their least powerful. During the day, wear hats that cover the face, especially wide-brimmed hats. While at the beach, wear a cover-up. Dark, tightly woven fabrics are best for days when the sun is the brightest.
2. Use sunscreen every single day
When choosing a sunscreen, look for one with at least an SPF of 30, but the higher the number the better. Be sure to choose a sunscreen that is waterproof and to reapply every couple of hours.
3. SPF in your makeup
Many makeup manufacturers offer makeup with SPF in it. This is great for your skin. Be sure to choose makeup that offers you an SPF of 15 or more to maximize your coverage.
4. Avoid tanning beds
Tanning beds and tanning salons are the worst places to be if you want to avoid dangerous UV rays. Frequenting tanning beds or salons will greatly increases your chances of getting melanoma.
5. Keep babies out of the sun
Babies and children should have limited exposure to the sun, especially before 6 months of age. Remember to apply sunscreen on them as well. Even though they may not go in the water, it is important to reapply it every few hours to maximize the effectiveness of the sunscreen.
6. Head inside when the sun is the hottest
The hours between 10 am and 4 pm are when the sun is at its strongest and it is ideal to avoid being outdoors as much as possible. The UV rays will be the most intense and if you must go out remember to cover up!
